Danesborough sings choral...and all that jazz

Choral will merge with jazz for an evening of memorable melodies by modern composers in a concert by the Danesborough Chorus, with the Nikki Iles Trio, in St Mary's Church, Woburn.

Saturday's concert (April 6), will be conducted by Ian Smith, and feature a mixture of sacred and secular music, mostly in a jazz style.

A Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott is a 'gorgeous, soulful' and highly original setting of the Latin Missa Brevis, and was first performed in New Orleans in 2004.

Henryk Górecki’s Totus Tuus, his most popular unaccompanied choral work, fuses choral simplicity with his deeply felt religious faith, and was composed to celebrate Pope John Paul II’s visit to his native Poland in 1987.

Will Todd’s gospel-influenced Songs of Peace was composed in memory of his mother, to whom he attributes his lifetime love of choral music, and its themes are love, loss and eternity.

Jazz legend George Shearing’s Songs and Sonnets dramatically changes the mood, with fresh, exciting and accessible settings of poems and songs by Shakespeare, that glorify love and the return of Spring with, for example, 'When daffodils begin to peer' (from The Winter's Tale ) and 'It was a lover and his lass' (from As You Like It).

The programme also features a jazz set by the trio of instrumentalists: Nikki Iles, one of the UK's most accomplished jazz pianists, Dave Whitford (bass strings) and Luke Tomlinson (drums).  Something completely different to get your feet tapping!

Tickets for this concert are £20, £15 (central nave, reserved) and £10 (side aisle, unreserved). Concession tickets £5 to under 18s.
