Heroes and Villains scarecrow trail is a hit in Milton Keynes

The village of Loughton has been transformed into a land of Heroes and Villains, thanks to the 2019 Scarecrow Trail.

A record 81 scarecrows were dotted around the village and church, visitors were able to find their favourite as they wandered round one of the three different trails open to visitors.

This year’s entries from local people, schools and charities were judged by a panel including Hywel Jones from MK Gallery.

He said: “There was such a variety of entries and we were blown away by the creativity and hard work that had gone into them; it was really hard to make our decision."

After much deliberation the winners’ rosettes went to:

a) Supreme Champion: the scarecrows of Crane Court: Lord Voldemort & Bellatrix Lestrange, Hogwart’s Heroes, Snape, Hagrid & Fang, and Professor Dumbledore & Aragog.

They were created by Gareth Bishop & Laura Goff, Derek & Celia Walker, Terry Caulfield, Michelle Twiselton, and Dave & Sally Puddephatt respectively.

Hywel said: "The creativity is excellent, and you can appreciate all the planning that went into them. It just shows what neighbours can do when they work together".

b) Reserve Champions:

1] Supertato and Friends by Loughton Manor School.

2] Sniffing out the Villain by Michael & Lucy Scott.

3] Cruella + 101 Dalmatians by Macintyre Milton Keynes Lifelong Learning Centre

The trail continues and you can get your trail guide priced £3 from All Saints’ Church on Saturday 22 June between 10.00 and 5.00 and Sunday 23 June between 11.00 and 5.00. Refreshments are available throughout the weekend.

Parking is available in the paddock off Bradwell Road for just £1 managed by Loughton Scouts and proceeds will be shared between them and the church.

Loughton Baptist Church will have a ‘Scarecrow Stop’ on Saturday 22 June with children’s activities, BBQ and refreshments from 10.00am to 3.00pm. And the Studio on the Green will open its doors to visitors between 10.00am and 5.00pm all weekend, showcasing their beautifully crafted pottery and paintings.

The trail has created a great opportunity to explore an old part of Milton Keynes that has grown and expanded with the city over the last 50 years and it now very much part of it.

The beautiful church of All Saints’, Loughton and its distinctive tower is one of the landmark buildings in this part of MK. All proceeds from the Trail are helping to support the church which celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2018.
