Systems of Philosophy – Wall(paper)s of Mind is an exhibition of printmaking and artworks at Bletchley Park and English Heritage’s Wrest Park, near Silsoe in Bedfordshire.
The works, researched and created by artist Sally Annett, are inspired by the archival and paper-based collections at both sites.
The Bletchley Park exhibition opens to the public this Saturday (July 14).
The archive at Bletchley Park holds around half a million paper documents from World War Two, and Wrest Park cares for English Heritage’s entire wallpaper collection with over 1500 examples.
Annett has focused on aspects of the internationalism, the lost place of women at war as well as the overarching theme of the fragmentation of information.
Commenting on the exhibitions, Annett said: “It has been a privilege to work in such incredible collections; they hold unique insights into the layers of history. I hope that the works produced begin to convey some of the complexity but also the beauty of the paper items and that the public embraces the opportunity to visit, experience and understand, hands on, this living heritage”.
The project has been supported by the Arts Council England and for the past year Annett has been working with the collections and curatorial teams at both Wrest Park and Bletchley Park.
The result is two exhibitions of engravings and works on paper as well as other property specific pieces, including giant hand bound codices, large external photographic panels, poetry and origami multiples.
During July the properties will also host lectures, demonstrations and workshops to complement the exhibition.
