GALLERY: PRIVATE VIEW AT THE STRIPEY PANTS DOODLE DOLL PROJECT

Fat ones, thin ones, colourful ones, grey ones...miserable ones, crazy ones and happy ones.

Just as in real life, the Stripey Pants Doodle Dollies came in all shapes, sizes, colours and moods.

And an impressive turn-out descended on Stantonbury Gallery last night (Friday, Oct 23) to get a closer look at the mini-works of art.

Hundreds of people made a doodle doll their very own, but the project was the brainwave of just one lady, artist Shelly Wyn-de-bank.

She distributed a few cotton dolls to her family and watched as they turned the blank canvasses into little people.

The idea snowballed, and became an international project when social media quickly spread the word far and wide.  Soon, a whole community of cotton characters appeared.

Now, 12 months since the arty experiment began development, the fruits of so many people's labour have been gathered for the exhibition at Stantonbury.

It really does make for quite the spectacle, and there are way too many for your brain to fully connect with during just one visit to the gallery – we spied Batman, a gingerbread man, a Beetlejuice recreation, a Minion, Siouxsie and Morrissey and a friendly little pumpkin pal using his stint to demonstrate.

'Pumpkins are for life not just Halloween,' he declares proudly.

There were some made of buttons, some decorated in floral, there was a monkey, a ghost, and one dressed in money. Fuzzy ones, scruffy ones, ghostly ones, paint splattered examples, some wore capes, some were bare and others bursting with flair....

Collectively they make for a grand show of artistic endeavours.

Sometimes art is exclusive, elitist and untouchable. Thankfully, doodle-dolls are the antidote – inclusive, fun and for everyone.

The double D's have their backs to the wall at Stantonbury for one more week if you want to take a peek, and it is most advisable.

I wonder if the dolls do as their Toy Story counterparts and come alive when left alone...that would make for the most brilliantly bonkers party!
