A feature-length selection of short live action and animated films from the EE British Academy Film Awards will be shown on Friday night (March 18) at Milton Keynes Gallery.
Each of those on the shortlist represent the best of British short filmmaking and showcase our innovative and exciting British talent.
Jury members this year included filmmaker Shane Meadows (the man responsible for the superb This Is England) and actor and writer Mackenzie Crook.
This is the fourth year that BAFTA has partnered with the Independent Cinema Office to distribute the films in the UK, which is good news for film fans here. And this year's package is 'reel' class: “This year's nominees include a previous BAFTA and Oscar winner, a BAFTA Scotland award-winner, and two films shot by cinematographers who are past BAFTA scholarship recipients,” explained BAFTA Chief Executive, Amanda Berry OBE.
“The range of experience amongst the nominees showcases the amazing opportunities for creativity in short films, and cements their invaluable role in the film industry.”
The winners – announced at February's glittering award-show – were the British Short Animation Edmond, and the British Short Film Operator.
Edmond has an impulse to love and be close to others that is perhaps a little too strong.
As he contemplates his options, he goes on a journey backwards through his life in search of the origins of his desires.
Meantime, operator is set in a Fire Control Room, and a call comes through from a young mother, whose three-year-old son is trapped upstairs as flames creep down the same stairs that the mother must use to reach him.
And she must rely on the operators guidance to do it...
Completing Friday's line-up will be Samuel-613, Prologue, Mining Poems or Odes, Manoman and Over.
Collectively, they add up to 72 minutes of gripping screen time.
