FILM REVIEW & GALLERY: A CAT-ASTROPHE OR WOOF-TASTIC? THE VOICES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Very good/lots to enjoy

Synopsis

Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is a likeable, young guy who works picking and packing at a bathroom furniture company. He also is a schizophrenic who is tormented by the ‘voices’ of his supportive dog Bosco and hyper-critical cat Mr Whiskers. When an English office girl he likes (Arterton) stands him up on a date, he accidentally kills her and hears her voice urging him to continue his killing spree.

Review

Probably one of the most difficult screenplays to get off the ground, Persepolis director Marjane Satrapi's comic horror/musical (admit it, there can't be many of these around) waltzes the fine line between bloody murders and blacker than pitch comedy with considerable success.

All American jock Reynolds impresses mightily as the sweet schizo who can't stop bumping off his colleagues to satisfy his bullying cat in what might be the first decent movie he has made that doesn't require him to grin glibly or take his top off every 20 minutes (the latter omission here is possibly a downside). 

It's so surprisingly good it's revelatory.

Brit girl done good Gemma Arterton as the flakey object of his desires and Jackie Weaver as his professionally ineffective shrink complete a cracking supporting cast in a film that proves its perfectly possible to laugh whilst people are being bludgeoned to death. Whether that's acceptable, is an entirely different matter altogether.
