Good/worth watching

Synopsis

A wicked witch (Meryl Streep) sets a baker (James Corden) a number of tasks to remove a curse placed on him and his wife (Emily Blunt) that condemned them to a childless marriage. He sets off on an odyssey to complete them which seems him meet a number of characters also on their own adventures, such as a boy (Daniel Huttlestone) trying to sell a cow to earn money for his family, a little girl in a red cape (Lilla Crawford) and a put-upon young woman called Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) who simply must attend a party in a far off land.

Review

A film that had me 'umming' and 'ahhing' over its relative worth like no other, this adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical from the 1980's is high on vocal talent and star wattage.

Streep is one hell of a class act as the neurotically wicked witch, tormenting all around her who dare tread on her beloved garden and Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen raise a lot of laughs as wonderfully self-absorbed Princes.

A supporting cast of stars lend surprisingly good voices to the rest of the proceedings that, although cluttered, repetitive and far too long, retains a smart edge and have more than just a twinkle of fairy-dust over them.

Depending on one's view of Sondheim musicals, this will either charm it's way into your hearts, leaving you skipping out of the cinema in blissful contentment, or, if you are a slightly more cynical human, vomiting into your empty popcorn bucket.
