star rating 3/5 worth watching
Synopsis
Rachel (Constance Wu) is the intelligent, sweet and loving Professor girlfriend of the sweet and handsome Nick (Henry Golding). When they travel back to his parents’ home country of Singapore, she suddenly finds out that rather than being the middle-class man of her dreams, he is a member of the elite, super-rich of this new land…one with a mysterious past.
Frozen out by his ex’s bitchy clique and his snobbish mother (Michelle Yeoh), Rachel has to rely on her inner strength and a couple of pals to navigate the world of the mega-wealthy.
Review by Jason Day (@Reelreviewer)
Based on the book by Kevin Kwan, this fluffy and peppy comic drama won't win any awards for the most laughs in a single movie, but what it lacks in big guffaw moments it makes up for in charm, sweetness and gorgeous, almost criminally beautiful, design and casting.
Wu and Golding make a stunningly handsome couple but Michelle Yeoh as Golding's frosty mother proves that age has not blunted her looks (she is XX) and the passing of time has strengthened her acting muscle.
But it's the less conventionally attractive support cast who impress the most. As Wu's fashionista pals, Awkwafina and Nicos Santos steal the show as they let rip with some eye-watering one-liners and turn modern-day fairy godparents as they help her dress like a Princess.
