Jurassic World (2015)
Director: Colin Trevorrow.
Synopsis
It’s been more than 20 years since the original Jurassic Park was set to open.
Now, a fully functioning and hugely popular amusement resort has opened there, managed by Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard).
To up the ante, they have been genetically modifying the dinosaurs to create more exciting attractions.
The newest is a hybrid of the Tyrannosaurus and unknown other animals and has been kept in solitary confinement since birth.
When it escapes, all hell is let loose and Claire has to rely on the rough and ready Owen (Chris Pratt), a former Navy SEAL, to save not only her, but her missing nephews (Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson) and several thousand guests.
With more than $2bn in ticket sales alone, it was hardly surprising that someone at some point in time would revisit/reimagine/rehash the old Spielbergian formulae of kids, dinosaurs and mayhem.
Fourteen years in various levels of pre-production hell might then have seemed a worthwhile amount of time in hammering out the dream script, cast and crew.
Or maybe not, but this is what we are given, an admittedly fantastical, tightly choreographed and impressively bigger production that must have been planned on the type of corporate focus group spreadsheets mentioned throughout the film.
The dinosaurs are scarier, the humans run faster (even Howard, in high heels. Throughout the film). All boxes ticked then for a great night out.
