There is nothing wrong with that trusty bowl of cornflakes, or a bland - but healthy - bowl of porridge in the morning.
But it's nice to dig into something a little more taste inspired every now and then, as we found when we visited Cafe Rouge in the Restaurant Quarter of thecentre:mk for a spot of 'Petit Déjeuner' last week, writes Sammy Jones.
Take a coffee and a pastry while looking over the day's headlines, set yourselves up with a baked in-house baguette and preserves or tuck into a yummy dish of granola.
If work won't wait, the free WiFi will enable you to get business underway while you sate yourselves.
There are plenty of vegetarian friendly choices on the menu, and we opted for Le Végétarien (no prizes if you translate), which comprised two free-range eggs (cooked your way), avocado, mushrooms, spinach, beans, tomato and toast.
It is, if you will, a healthy cooked breakfast.
There is no greasy oil here, only a perfectly sized, colourful looking plate to get you set up for the day.
The Cafe Rouge ambience ensures the visit is a pleasure too - efficient staff, prompt service and a decor which is easy to relax into.
The side dish of herb potato wedges (well, we had to try them on your behalf) are hoovered up quicker than a Vax...although we hope we had a little more decorum as we tucked them away.
We've had woeful wedges aplenty, but these perfectly seasoned little tattie treats get full marks. And we shared, so not too naughty.
I know a good coffee from a poor cappuccino (I've got qualifications in those coffee beans that obsess the nation) and Cafe Rouge appreciate the art too, based on those cups of caffeine enjoyed on both sides of our table.
We would have vacated happily enough when our plates were cleared, but wait. What's that winking at us from the menu?
Chouquettes? 'Baked in-house with choux balls, coated with sugar, served with crème fraîche or hot chocolate dipping sauce.'
Well you would, wouldn't you? And so we do: 'A portion to share, please.'
'With the hot sauce?' our waitress says, leading us into temptation, and we nod.
And besides, those little balls of sugary christened naughtiness are nice and light.
The only problem with starting your day the Cafe Rouge way?
It makes returning to a home-made bowl of bland porridge all the more disappointing!
