Flying Machines play emotive and dramatic music, drawing upon influences as diverse as jazz, pop, progressive rock and metal to create an utterly unique and modern sound - and this week they'll be playing that live in Bedford, at The Quarry Theatre.
Formed by guitarist Alex Munk in 2014, Flying Machines feature some of the most innovative young musicians to emerge in recent years from the UK jazz scene – Matt Robinson on piano/keyboards, Conor Chaplin on electric bass and Dave Hamblett on drums.
Centred on Munk's unique compositional approach, the band fuse visceral improvisation with anthemic melodies and lusciously textured soundscapes.
It's a sound shot through with the 'here and now' of London's cutting-edge music scene, a decadent mash up of prog rock energy, free-wheeling improvisations and ambient meditations that never detract from the emotive lyricism at the music's core. You can hear as much on their wickedly bold and uncompromising debut album from 2016.
Munk said: “I’m drawn to music that combines improvisation with a visceral, head thrashing energy: big, chunky riffs, choppy grooves and the guttural roar of a guitar going at full tilt. It’s why artists such as Wayne Krantz and Troyka have always resonated with me.
"I also love the melodically driven and through-composed music of Tigran Hamsayan, and the lyricism of players such as Pat Metheny and Mike Walker. The album draws upon all these varying influences, resulting in plenty of “fists in the air” moments and romantic, sweeping melodies, bringing forth an epic quality that ties it all together.”
