After releasing her stunning top 10 record ‘Castles’ last year, Lissie has returned in 2019 with ‘When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective’- an evocative collection that reinterprets songs from her first decade in music, as well as exceptional covers of Fleetwood Mac and The Dixie Chicks.
Proving that her past isn’t static, the songs included on this release, some written nearly 10 years ago are still fresh and vibrant, evoking feelings old and new.
For Lissie, the idea behind ‘When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective’ came about almost as a test of each tune’s structural integrity.
“When you take a song out of its production and strip it down to its basic elements,” she opines, “you get the heart of the song. You find out whether it can stand on its own, whether it’s a good song. When they come down to their basic bones, are these really meaningful pieces that stand on their own?”

Where ‘Castles’ was defined by Lissie looking to expand her sound, reaching out for new sonic palettes, incorporating synths and drum machines into her sound, ‘When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective’ subtracts these elements, removing the noise and laying Lissie’s song writing bare for an emotive and powerful listening experience.
The record is toned down but certainly not buttoned up.
Singles from the album include title track ‘When I’m Alone’ (Catching A Tiger, 2010), ‘Don’t You Give Up On Me’ (My Wild West, 2016), and the astonishing, skin-tingling, crystal prism that is Lissie’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ - exclusive to The Piano Retrospective.
Known to be unafraid of change ‘When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective’ is a typically bold move.
Lissie is one of the best singer-songwriters around, and she is coming our way - don't miss her at The Stables on Monday (October 21).
