THIS WEEK AT THE STABLES: NIGEL STONIER, THE GLORIOUS FOOLS, TOM GREEN SEPTET AND MORE...

Some years ago, Total MK was lucky enough to enjoy a wonderful chat with the late, great John Martyn.

We saw him live too.  His health wasn't great at that point, but his ability on The Stables stage was still stunning.

This Thursday evening (Jan 29) the Wavendon venue will welcome The Glorious Fools to the fore, playing John's music on the same stage.

In a nod to Martyn's genre spanning styles, they will tuck into the folk, jazz and blues side of things.

On Friday night Nigel Stonier (top) will be live on Stage 2.

As a producer and songwriter he has worked with artists including Martha Wainwright, Thea Gilmore, Lindisfarne and Fairport Convention.

But he is a singer-songwriter in his own jacket too, and released the recent album Built For Storms to critical acclaim.  Take a peek, and reap the musical benefits.

You'll not be surprised to learn that tickets to see the Syd Lawrence Orchestra in the Jim Marshall auditorium on Friday, and folk singer Seth Lakeman (Sat, Jan 31) are sold out.

And fans of comedy fella Lee Nelson won't be laughing if they've yet to take a ticket to see his tour warm up over on Stage 2 on Saturday - that's fully booked too.

How about spending a little time with saxophonist Gerald Albright on Sunday (Feb 1) instead?

He has worked with artists including Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and Quincy Jones, and his own work has seen him accumulate a good few Grammy nominations.  He returns to these parts to promote the new album Slam Dunk.

MPMG John Coghlan Quo Promo 2014

One time drummer for denim-delights Status Quo, John Coghlan (above)  bowed out of the rock mob more than three decades ago, piecing together a couple of bands before setting up John Coghlan's Quo.

Expect Quo classics aplenty.

On Stage 2 the Tom Green Septet (below) will be holding attentions.  Winners of the prestigious Dankworth prize for Jazz Composition in 2013, Tom Green is an exceptional talent, one of the most exciting young trombonists and composers on the scene.

MPMG Tom Green Septet

His Septet 'weaves together influences as diverse as Brazilian choro to New Orleans second line, to form tunes with striking melodies, colourful harmony and propulsive grooves.

That's a whole lot of good stuff for a mere twelve quid.

On Wednesday evening, The Eduardo Niebla Experience take over with a flamenco-jazz set fused with a myriad of Eastern colours and a Gypsy-jazz edge.
