The Comedy Cow spent Monday evening grazing alongside familiar faces including Clive Anderson, Su Pollard and Christopher Biggins at the Chortle Comedy Awards, held in Camden.
For the two schoolteachers behind the venture it proved to be a worthy trip too – they returned triumphant with the title of Best Small Comedy Club in the Midlands & East!
The Chortle Awards are the only comedy awards to give venues this level of recognition.
Chortle was set up in 2000 with the aim of being the most comprehensive, critical and up-to-date guide to all aspects of comedy in Britain and the awards attracted more than 13,500 votes.
“We already have an excellent standing amongst acts who appreciate the quality of our nights, however we hope that this award will open up doors to a wider range of acts whom we have not worked with before,” said one half Comedy Cow, Steve Powell.
Steve runs the club with partner in giggles Ben Robinson. They originally set up at the tail end of 2012 to give MK folks an alternative night out.
But what puts these guys at an advantage is a real passion for what they do. The Comedy Cow isn't about making a quick buck, it's about delivering quality. Simple as that.
“We hand pick each line-up to ensure it offers variety, and is something that we are proud to put on and be associated with,” Ben said.
“We are proud of the entertainment we provide, and believe we offer exceptional value for money.
“Coming to our comedy night is like going to a theatre, but having a drink on a table in front of you, and being able to socialise in the intervals.
“We have house rules to ensure that both the audience and acts achieve maximum enjoyment from the nights”.
So far Comedy Cow has given a platform to rising stars including Romesh Ranganathan and Katherine Ryan, and attracted comedians including Russell Kane, Lee Nelson, Gary Delaney and Richard Herring.
That's quite some list, and trust us, there will be plenty more to follow.
The Comedy Cow run three set events a month, a Gong Show at the Casino:MK, and regular comedy nights at the red dot bar, Stadium:MK and The Crown in Stony Stratford.
