James Bond has come to Bletchley Park.
On display in Hut 12, a contemporary art exhibition celebrates Ian Fleming’s James Bond series, as well as the most recent 007 continuation novels written by critically acclaimed author Anthony Horowitz (pictured).
Bond at Bletchley Park: Illustrations and Inspirations includes artworks newly commissioned by Eazl from a carefully selected roster of emerging and mid-career artists from the UK and beyond.
Participating artists include Threadneedle Prize finalists David Storey and Tomáš Tichý, the Australian painter Marc Freeman, and the prize-winning illustrator Finn Dean. The pieces are each inspired by a specific scene, theme or character from a James Bond novel.
The exhibition also presents new research into Fleming’s connection to Bletchley Park, exploring how his work in Naval Intelligence helped to inspire the creation of the James Bond books.
Cdr Ian Fleming RNVR visited and worked with Bletchley Park personnel throughout the war in his role at the Admiralty as Personal Assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence. Fleming had security clearance to read Ultra reports and some influence over BP staff appointments. He was responsible for intelligence coordination and planning, contriving ways to intercept signals material.
Alongside original wartime correspondence between Ian Fleming and Lt Cdr E Hok, his contact in the Royal Navy’s NID(10) codes and ciphers team, are facsimile documents from the National Archives, including correspondence between Fleming and the Bletchley Park Codebreakers.
The exhibition was officially opened by Anthony Horowitz last week, coinciding with the release of the second official Bond novel by Horowitz ‘Forever and a Day’ , the follow up to the critically acclaimed ‘Trigger Mortis’.
The novel published in the Uk published in the UK this Thursday is a prequel to ‘Casino Royale’ , Fleming’s first 007 novel, and explores the origins of the world's’ most famous secret agent.
The exhibition runs until 14 October.
