Muslim residents from Milton Keynes plan litter clear up

As Britain plans to come out of lockdown, members from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), the UK’s largest and oldest Muslim youth group, are initiating city’s largest litter picking campaign on the last weekend of March.

Members are urged to take litter pickers and bin bags with them, when they go out for exercise in their local area as per government’s COVID guidelines, to clear the litter in parks and pedestrian walkways on the weekend of 27th of March.

The Parks Trust of Milton Keynes has recently warned all members of the public about the dangers that litter can pose to the local wildlife.

The youth, some as young as seven years old, will first be getting up early, before dawn, for a special prayer, then donning hi-vis jackets and heading to pick up rubbish, and make sure everything is tidy in parks.

Their aim is that the initiative will not only instil the values of volunteering and community service in all its members, but also support local councils by alleviating costs.

Milton Keynes Youth Leader Saeed Nazir said: “In Islam, cleanliness is part of faith, so there’s no better way to serve our faith and our country.

"Islam urges every Muslim to partake in charitable giving, community service, and promote cleanliness. AMYA has and continues to instil young people with a sense of civic responsibility, and a desire to promote harmony within our local communities.

"The clean-up campaign ensures Muslim youth can be active members of society and serve their communities and the environment.”
