Christmas came early for a pair of lucky bears at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo this year as they got their very own festive tree laden with delicious decorations.
Zookeepers adorned the 10-foot Christmas tree with a medley of the two European brown bears’ favourite treats, with baubles made of fresh apples, pears, grapes and frozen carrots!
The omnivorous duo, 24-year-old twin sisters Wellington and Winslow, also got their huge paws stuck into a few presents under the tree as they foraged for the fishy snacks concealed inside, including trout and sprats.
Zookeeper Louise Harding said: “As it’s the season of giving we gave the bears their very own Christmas tree, adorned with their favourite foods, and presents stuffed with special treats.
“European brown bears are found in woodland mountain habitats in the wild, and they’re well equipped for sniffing out and foraging for their food.
“While these bears may look cuddly, their giant paws and sharp claws helped them make short work of the wrapped presents under their tree!”
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is open to the public all year round except for Christmas Day, and a visit during the Christmas school holidays promises to be fun-filled as visitors can help prepare festive treats for the animals at an Elves’ workshop and attend fascinating keeper talks, such as Reindeer Revealed.
With plenty to keep the whole family entertained, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is a fantastic day out this Christmas.
