In Review: Legally Blonde the Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre

This week at Milton Keynes Theatre it's the return of Legally Blonde The Musical - a show which makes no apologies for being a high energy explosion of pink and blonde which was a hit on broadway and in the West End before going on tour.

Opening night on Bank Holiday Monday saw a sell-out audience of mums and daughters enjoying the comedy which maxed out on glitter, fun and frantic dancing to tell the story of Elle Woods' unlikely journey from Malibu to Harvard Law accompanied by her tiny dog Bruiser.  Along the way, she proves that "being true to yourself never goes out of style".

Dying her hair blonde for the starring role is X Factor finalist and last year's UK Eurovision entrant Lucie Jones who manages to win over even the most cynical members of the audience by managing to make Elle's character warm and relatable.

Of course, she's a fantastic singer and dancer but perhaps it's how much she seems to be enjoying herself in the role that makes you get behind her and want her to succeed.

There's a Bridget Jones-like vulnerability in her portrayal and she's toned down the annoying accent to give Elle a real, unexpected depth. This didn't always fit comfortably with a couple of the costumes Lucie wore in the show which seemed almost out of character with this portrayal, as well as being quite unflattering.

There was also an outstanding performance from Rita Simons (Eastenders' Roxy) who takes centre stage as Paulette, Elle's hairdresser.  Although she's only in a couple of scenes, she gets the chance to show her acting skills as well as some memorable singing and dancing.

Completing the cast are a talented chorus of cheerleaders and law students who bring a contagious energy to the show. Look out for a jaw-dropping dance routine with light-up skipping ropes, an explosion of confetti and some really catchy tunes!

This show takes the heart of Legally Blonde and adds music and dancing to create a feel-good musical which will leave you with a big smile and a spring in your step. It's impossible not to have a good time!

Legally Blonde The Musical is at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday 2nd June. Tickets are available  here
