Theatregoers of all ages will discover magic and mischief in a most delightful way when Mary Poppins flies to Milton Keynes Theatre this autumn, writes Georgina Butler.
The musical, which is produced and co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney, is visiting the city for a four-week run from Wednesday 29 October. Based on the children's books written by Pamela Lyndon (PL) Travers and the subsequent 1964 Walt Disney film, it promises to bring the enchanting story of the world's favourite nanny to life in a practically perfect production.
Prepare to be swept up in a timeless tale, unforgettable songs, dazzling choreography and incredible stagecraft.
High-flying nanny Mary Poppins arrives on Cherry Tree Lane just as young Jane and Michael Banks are becoming increasingly unruly, and their preoccupied parents are desperate for discipline. Mary permits neither disorder nor disharmony in her nursery, yet she brings plenty of fun into the family's lives. With the help of her friend Bert, a cheery chimney sweep, Mary teaches the children valuable life lessons through memorable adventures. Even the grown-ups learn a thing or two from this fantastical, firm-but-fair governess who advises that "anything can happen if you let it".
The show's score includes the classic songs, by Richard and Robert Sherman, that featured in the film – ‘Jolly Holiday’, ‘Step In Time’, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘Feed The Birds’ to name just a few. And there are also new songs and additional music and lyrics by award-winning British songwriting duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The show's choreography is by Matthew Bourne.
Leading the company are Australian stars Stefanie Jones (the Australian National Tour of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical) and Jack Chambers (winner of So You Think You Can Dance Australia). The pair have reprised their roles as Mary Poppins and Bert for the UK tour, having previously starred in the Australian production.
They will be joined by Michael D. Xavier as George Banks, Lucie-Mae Sumner as Winifred Banks, Rosemary Ashe as Mrs Brill, Wendy Ferguson as Miss Andrew, Sharon Wattis as Mrs Corry, Ruairidh McDonald as Robertson Ay and David Burrows as Admiral Boom. Patti Boulaye will play the role of Bird Woman until Sunday 16 November, with Lyn Paul taking on the role from Tuesday 18 November onwards.
Running time: Approximately 2 hours 40 minutes, including an interval.
