On Thursday (July 4), Stantonbury Theatre plays host to the acclaimed international mystery The Basement Tapes, arriving at the venue for one performance only.
A conflict of reality and memory and an outpouring of secrets, The Basement Tapes is told through physical performance, audio recordings and gripping narrative and is a must-see for fans of anything from Twin Peaks to smash-hit international podcast Serial.
The show is set in the aftermath of a woman’s death, with her granddaughter faced with the overwhelming task of clearing out her belongings. Deep in the cramped, cluttered basement, she discovers a series of mysterious tape recordings made by her grandmother, and as she hears the tapes for the first time, things start to unravel.
Squeezed together among the detritus of a cluttered basement, audience and performer face the waves of secrets and memories that emerge.
Already the winner of two UK awards – a Fringe First from the Scotsman and an award for Outstanding Performance from The Stage Newspaper – the show represents a major coup for Stantonbury Theatre and evidence of the venue’s increasing profile throughout the UK as a home for exciting new theatre.
