The Very Hungry Caterpillar is coming to Milton Keynes: The Eric Carle classic arrives at Stantonbury Theatre this week

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has delighted generations of readers since it was first published in 1969 nibbling its way into the hearts of millions of children all over the world.

It has been translated into 62 languages and sold over 41 million copies, remaining one of the top ten bestselling children’s books of all time. Eric Carle's well-known books captivated readers with his iconic colourful hand painted tissue paper collage illustrations and distinctively simple stories, introducing generations of children to a bigger, brighter world – and to their first experience of reading itself.

Now the timeless classic makes its way off the page and onto the stage - on Friday (March 17) afternoon it will be live at Stantonbury Campus Theatre, with a 4.30pm show time.

Created by Jonathan Rockefeller, the critically acclaimed production of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show’ features a menagerie of 75 lovable puppets, faithfully adapting four of Eric Carle’s stories: ‘The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse’ ‘Mister Seahorse ’The Very Lonely Firefly’ and of course ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show first premiered in Australia in 2015 before opening in New York at the Acorn Theatre in January 2016. The New York production broke box office records and attracted celebrities with families including Chelsea Clinton, Emily Blunt, Neil Patrick Harris and Diane Sawyer. Following a sell-out run in the West End last Christmas, it now arrives in Milton Keynes

“For many in the audience, this show will undoubtedly be their very first time at the theatre, so we have been very conscientious to ensure that we have been absolutely faithful to their favourite characters," said Jonathan.

"Our goal is to take the audience on a truly memorable journey, bringing these stories to life through the magic of puppetry, movement and stagecraft. We have a menagerie of larger-than-life puppets, bursting with vibrant colour – it’s astonishing to compare the original illustrations to the puppets and how exact they are."
