Milton Keynes to support World Wetlands Day campaign

On Saturday 4 February, Milton Keynes will mark World Wetlands Day with a free event at Floodplain Forest Nature Reserve and everyone is welcome.

World Wetlands Day is a UN-backed campaign that will see activities taking place all over the world to raise awareness of wetland ecosystems. Officially, World Wetlands Day is 2 February, but The Parks Trust has chosen to mark it on the nearest Saturday so that more people can join in.

Wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation, freshwater availability and more. Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, and wetlands are being lost three times faster than forests*.

Commenting on the upcoming event, Lewis Dickinson, Biodiversity Officer at The Parks Trust, said, “There is an urgent need to raise awareness of wetlands and reverse their loss. We hope that lots of local people come to this event and take part in fun activities that will show why MK’s wetlands matter.

“There will be a chance to join guided walks, speak with biodiversity experts, enjoy nature crafts and take a closer look at some of the species that call the floodplain home.”

The event will also offer an opportunity for people to see the Konik ponies that live on the floodplain and learn how these very special wild animals help to maintain the environment.

Activities on the day are suitable for all ages, and visitors can drop in at any time between 10am and 1.30pm. Free parking is available at Manor Farm Court, MK12 5NN.
