Howe Park Wood Education and Visitor Centre will open this morning (Sun, April 12), and television vet and wildlife presenter Steve Leonard will be charged with cutting the ribbon on the exciting new hub.
Everyone is welcome at the event, to discover more about the centre and the Parks Trust’s education work.
Steve will declare the centre open at 11am and give a short public talk.
Other activities will range from natural craft workshops to walks and children’s activities.
The education and visitor centre sits well with The Trust’s charitable objectives to improve public education and provide facilities for leisure and recreation.
It contains a classroom, meeting room, an outside decked area and new pond dipping platforms. Bird and bat boxes will be installed in the adjacent woodland and there will be new interpretation panels to help people learn about the nearby wildlife.
A feature wall at the front will include a number of habitat boxes which are wooden boxes filled with natural materials to form insect homes.
The building also incorporates low carbon technologies including Photo Voltaic panels and an air source heat pump. Local artist Annette Reed has created four stunning stained glass windows depicting the changing seasons in Howe Park Wood.
“We’re really pleased that the centre is now complete and the open day will really showcase all of the fantastic activities that will be available to encourage people to learn about and understand the wonderful green spaces in Milton Keynes,” said Briony Fox, Head of Community Engagement at The Parks Trust.
