SAMUEL PEPYS 'SIGHTING' IN STONY STRATFORD

Here's something you don't get invited to every day - An Evening with Samuel Pepys!

We kid you not, Ayres & Graces - happening at York House Centre in Stony Stratford on Saturday (Jan 24) evening - offers just that.

Pepys served as a naval administrator and MP, and was aboard the ship which returned Charles II from Holland to restore the English monarchy to the throne in 1660.

He chronicles his day to day life through an era that delivered the restoration, the plague and the Great Fire.

Plenty is penned of his extra-marital affairs too, and it is fair to say he was decidedly frank in detail!

In the true spirit of restoration theatre, you are warmly invited to eat, drink and be merry while Pepys regals with tales of drinking, womanising, historical intrigue and stories of his natural bodily functions...

Pepys' diaries - written in a form of shorthand known as Tachygraphy - provide us with an invaluable account of life in London more than 350 years ago, and in colourful details.

In Ayres & Graces, Pepys - played by John Alexander - will deliver a selection of readings from his diaries between 1660 and 1669.

Period music will provide accompaniment, played by Mr Simpson's Little Consort.

And Pepys would most certainly approve - he was a keen music fan, whether as composer, player or listener.

Saturday's event is most certainly not for all ears though - and those with a delicate constitution, shall we say, would be best advised to stay away.

Those who like a little sauce with their writings, however, can step right up!

Tickets for the bash - part of the Stony Words programme - are on sale at £10.
