Making a Splash: A spotlight on Milton Keynes artist Steve Urwin

He is influenced by emotional pondering, would love to collaborate with David Hockney, and would like to see his creativity used for health benefits.  Meet Milton Keynes artist Steve Urwin...

Name: Steve Urwin

Mediums you work in: Acrylic paint, paint, inks, resin, recycled glass, plaster of paris

What fuels your creativity? Many things including, a momentary glance at a sunset.

The way the natural world uses colour in amazing break rule combinations.  My own imaginative river flow. and emotional pondering.

History: Music has been the tour de force for most of my life however, around 2002 I became quite ill.

A part of my own personal therapy was drawing cherries.

This brought me forward into some healing and ignited another creative genre within me.
Art has become a passion, continues to amaze me what creativity releases from deep inside.

The piece of work you have produced that you are most proud of, and why?
It has to be my signature piece A Bigger Splash a 4’ x 2” highly textured depiction of a swan landing into water.
It captured all I am about on canvas.

I love texture and colour combinations also, a means to express a highly charged event with paint on a canvas!
Happy to say it was sold some years ago

Did you choose art, or did art choose you?
I think it chose me, I did not set out to an artist pre se.
It seem to grow a fire within me to express myself and experiment with colour and the elements that cause me to pursue some unknown destination.

Career highlight: I was given an opportunity to host an exhibition in the CMK library of my artwork.

This also also enabled me to invite a sculptor and glassblower to join me in this great event.

If you could invite three artists, living or dead, to create a masterpiece with, who would you choose and why?

Picasso David Hockney Paul Klee
They are all ground and rule breakers.

They each have pushed the desire of dare to be different, far beyond anyone else.

Paul Klee was one the only artists I really took interest in while at school.Picasso at first, was someone I laughed at when a young man, now I realise he really rocked the boat.he was a fabulous artist who decided to change his style drastically without fear of anyone else.

David Hockney continues to challenge us all with the new work he consistently brings, it is always fresh and also always fabulous.

Tell us about your creative ambitions?
Firstly I would wish to cause anyone to stop and look and linger at my creativity.

Art and colour in life is an essential factor that does us good.  Certain colours really effect our emotional, physical and also, our mental state in a fantastic way.

It causes, depending on the subject matter, to release dopamine which brings a wellbeing state of mind.
i would love to have a patron and a lauded exhibition in a busy city.

I would also love for my work to be used for some health benefits to a community. I do love commission work and the collaboration that ensues from it.

Please talk to me regarding any future projects, I am quite friendly.

Where can we see you at work?
i am currently the resident artist in Newport Pagnell Library, Riverside basement entrance MK 16 8HQ
I work most weekdays but not all day.
Happy to have visitors,I feel honoured the fact that people have seen and bought my work.

It is a brilliant feeling!
