Playmobil: The Movie (2019). (U)

Director: Lino DiSalvo.

Animation

Rating: 2/5 Fair, passes the time

Synopsis
Young Marla (Anna Taylor-Joy) and Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) are orphaned after their parents are killed in a car accident. Marla has to grow up quickly and get a job to support the two, much to Charlie’s chagrin as he feels she has forgotten what it is like to have fun and enjoy life.

All of this changes when they visit an exhibit of Playmobil and are magically transported to the world of those toys.

Charlie is turned into a viking warrior and is kidnapped by a half-mad Roman despot who is collecting the greatest fighters in the world for his gladiatorial battles. Marla has to team-up with the too-chilled Del (Jim Gaffigan) to find Charlie and get back to the real world.

Review by @Reelreviewer
I must be suffering from cinematic cabin fever.

I've visited the multiplex three times this week to review its latest outpourings and - I swear to God - my sensibilities and sanity are being tested to the limit.

I could tolerate - just about - the latest Fast and (occasionally) Furious offering because it features real people (or as real as the monolithic Dwayne Johnson and stony faced Jason Statham can be).

But two mediocre animated movies have all but done me in.

The second of which is this 'cut-price, Fisher Price' rip-off of the Lego movie series.

There are good things in this - Anna Taylor-Joy voicing the lead character of Marla is marvellous - and it is prettily animated, but where are the laughs?!
