Total MK speaks to 911 ahead of their Arena MK visit

911 sold millions of records worldwide, had eight Top 5 hits in the UK, and a bagged a UK number 1.
Now the trio are going back on the road with The Boys Are Back tour, alongside 5ive, A1 and Damage...

The tour bus parks up in Milton Keynes on Sunday, March 8, 2020 for a night of big songs at Arena MK.

Total MK spoke to 911's Lee Brennan to see what's on the musical menu...

How does it feel to be taking to the road alongside 5ive, A1 and Damage?

Collectively, you must have enough stories to fill a few books...

[Laughs] We do have lots of stories. It's just going to be one big party night. We have as much fun as the fans, performing on tours like this. It's time for us to let our hair down as well.

It's almost 25 years since the band initially formed – what it the touring experience like today, compared to back then?

There is less stress nowadays, we are not constantly touring. It's more fun now. We use to work long hours with no days off.

You achieved multi-million sales of your records, and hit the top spot in the charts. What lasting memories do you have of those days?

We were so grateful when we finally got our first number one in Jan 1999 with a Little Bit More, it was a bit party for us and the fans, they all congregated outside our hotel, it was amazing to see - it was something we achieved together.

It was just a great, but crazy, time.

The industry has changed hugely since then – including the way people choose to access their music, of course.

Do you think the music industry is healthier today, or back then?

I think it's different, different decades bring different things. They have to sell records ultimately, so the punishing schedules and long days are never going to change. I find it quite sad these days that there isn't the build up to the number 1 chart position like there was in the 90s. If I  was an artist now releasing records I would prefer the 90s.

You have spoken out about the problems you encountered when the band began unravelling initially. What advice would you give to an aspiring musician today?

Just go for it and try and live your dream. There isn't a book to this business.

Some people with struggle with fame, some thrive on it. I was native when I was younger, after doing the Big Reunion TV show, I learnt how to balance my life in and outside the industry.

You've just played South East Asia, but are there plans for the band beyond The Boys Are Back Tour?

I think we should do. 911 have just played some gigs in Malaysia and we play to audiences of 4000, we've got a big fan base in Asia.

Finally, tell us what we can expect when the tour stops off in Milton Keynes next year?

A late night and just one big party. I like Milton Keynes, I was there recently and we might visit Xscape if we've got some free time.
