What fuels your creativity?
The impulse to make the unreal real.
A constant desire to experiment using different techniques to recreate recurring shapes over time.
Words and phrases.....whether from literature, music or just from something someone says.
Sometimes a simple image will occur to me that conveys a much larger more complex psychological theme. I tend to stay with an idea for a long time working through different imagery and repetitions. One image leads to another, often the same image just a different approach.
Nature and the world directly around me.
The piece of work you have produced that you are most proud of and why?
Rook Girl—Charcoal on Paper
This image encapsulates the desire to be free to doodle and allow things to “just” happen but to also create a composition that is clean and simple and still allows the viewer to project their own thoughts and ideas onto it. It was originally a doodle in a journal that was neither rook nor girl, something I scribbled in response to my Uncle dying....my dad’s only remaining sibling and family. I later went back and looked at this doodle and saw rook girl. It is for me a self portrait and the beginning of years of obsession with Rooks and Crows and Corvids generally.
If you could invite three artists, living or dead, to create a masterpiece with, who would you choose and why?
William Blake, Picasso
and Antony Gormley
Blake for Prophecy and Mysticism, Nature and Words, Picasso for the Experimentation and Freedom (and I imagine a lot of fun!) and Gormley for Scale, Repetition and Observation of Time.
The Plug: Tell us what you’ll be doing, showing or selling during MK Arts Week and who it will appeal to...
I will be exhibiting a series of work called ‘The Birds’. It includes drawings, original prints, paintings, mixed media....and for the very first time, sculpture
I will be in attendance throughout the week and very happy to discuss techniques and details..... I love to share ideas and creativity and inspire people to do and make whatever takes their fancy.
I am exhibiting with three other artists: Two sculptors and a painter: Len Gifford, Pam Cummings and Heather McCoy.......all together we make a stunning show of original art and all set in the most beautiful studios and garden.
All are welcome...to look, to buy, to chat......to enjoy!
