Naomi Lutman works in mixed media, and her animal creations are superb...
Name: Naomi Lutman
Works in/media type(s)
While exploring a wide variety of subjects from animals to the natural world I work in a variety of different mediums, creating intricate 3d textile art using felt, embroidery and beads; and I also produce vibrant acrylic paintings.
What fuels your creativity?
Making time to experiment with the colours, shapes and textures of the natural world, especially the symmetry that surrounds us: from the petals of a freshly opened flower to the stripes on a zebra! In my animal work, I love to celebrate the character of each creature through a focus on the eyes, and then combine fine detail with bold use of vibrant colour to bring my pieces alive.
The piece of work you have produced that you are most proud of, and why:
'Tommy dog' As Tommy is our pet, we know all his quirks and there's a lot of aspects of his character I wanted to get across in the piece such as friendship, playfulness, curiosity and companionship.
The piece enhances Tommy's key qualities - large ears for listening, big nose for sniffing out rats and a long beard to show his years of wisdom. He also has a glowing aura to show a godlike omnipresence and by my side no matter what life throws my way.
If you could invite three artists, living or dead, to create a masterpiece with, who would you choose and why?
Devon-based artist Yvonne Coomber for her loose and vibrant style of floral landscapes; American-based glassware artist Chihuly for his bold use of colour and form; Shropshire-based Ed Org for his amazing imagination creating creatures for a fantastical world. I think these 3 diverse artists would make a highly interesting masterpiece!
The plug: Tell us what you'll be doing, showing or selling during MK Arts Week and who it will appeal to...
I will be holding an open studio where original paintings of animals will be for sale alongside limited edition prints, greeting cards and tote bags - these will all appeal to animal lovers.
Felt artwork, inspired by nature, will also be for sale and will appeal to those who love flowers and would like something bright and colourful to display on their wall.
Painting and needle felting demonstrations will also be held in the studio throughout MKAW.
