A new chapter for Olney with the arrival of a new literary festival

Do you love reading? Are you a bookworm, a newspaper lover, a budding photographer or a poetry fan?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, you might be interested – perhaps even excited – to know that a new literary festival is being planned for Olney this month

Called Olney WordFest, it's the creation of local author Sue Upton and will be a celebration of everything literary – writing, books, publishing, editing, photography, even music and lyrics.

The event will take place on Saturday, September 14, and the venue will be the Olney Centre, in the heart of the town.

Preparations are well underway, and there are sufficient plans in place to ensure that every room in the Olney Centre will be used for the festival, which will also have an Alice in Wonderland theme, with characters from the story appearing throughout the day.

There will be authors’ presentations, one-to-one interviews and panel style Q&A sessions. Visitors will also be able to attend a ‘workshop’ for discussion and help with novel writing, play writing, making books and book art.

A café will offer a place to relax and discuss books and writing, while the Olney Centre’s library will house children's activities and points of interest.

It’s hoped this inaugural literary event will become a regular feature on the local calendar.
