FOOD REVIEW: Total MK is wowed by The Spring Menu at The Swan at Salford

It is a gloriously sunny day when we visit Salford's pretty Edwardian gastro pub, The Swan.

The chatter of leisurely diners and office workers, keen to soak up the rays, and partake in moreish menu opportunities greets us on this Thursday lunchtime. The Swan, set in a village location mere minutes away from Milton Keynes, is bustling, but charmingly calm at the same time, writes Sammy Jones.

Inside, the attention to detail doesn't just present itself on the plates - this is a pretty, charmingly-inviting premises.

Once seated, you'll be in for the long-haul!

We're here to sample the spring menu, and temptation arrives quickly with a warm Mini Bloomer and Garlic Butter.
The 'bread and butter' is accompanied by plump Campagnola Olives, which offer a nice, spicy kick, and as we dig in, we peruse the main menu.

Seeing the word 'salad' doesn't quite tickle my tastebuds, and I usually swerve in preference of something stodgy. But not today.
Throwing caution to the wind and preparing for a little disappointment, I opt for the green stuff.
Except that it isn't green when it arrives, rather a deliciously colourful array of textures that looks far too yummy to be healthy. As it turns out, it tastes every bit as good as it looks too.

This Carrot, Buckwheat, Pomegranate and Chickpea Salad is accompanied by Toasted Seeds and a Harissa Dressing.  It's not chilled (thankfully), which allows the flavours to shine individually, and together.
It is surprisingly filling too, and the same can be said for the Warm Crispy Camembert being devoured opposite.

Usually accompanied by a tomato chutney, my dining partner Al declines that, but accepts the bed of rocket leaves it is served atop.
Perfectly oozy, and a perfect cheesy-choice as it transpires.
For his main course, this long-time vegetarian sticks with the dairy choice and signs up for the Mac 'n' Cheese, which is livened by carrot and greens, and arrives with a side salad.

Across the table, I am presented with a generous portion of Tomato & Basil Gnocchi, which is a total departure from what I expected I would be greeted by!
It is teased by a healthy serving of Puttanesca Sauce, a rich tomato treat to break the softness of the gnocchi.

Both dishes have plenty of eating in them, and we are feeling happily satisfied by the time our plates are cleared.  But we're not quite done.
You can't look at The Swan's ample desert (sweet, savoury and liquid) menu without being tempted by at least a half dozen of the delights..
Unless you are Al, that is. Never one for fancy deserts, he opts for a two-scoop taste of Jude's Free-Range Ice Cream.

'Ice cream is generally ice cream,' he says, before sampling and deciding that this is anything but average!
I eventually bypass treats including Dark Chocolate Cheesecake (with roasted peanuts and caramel sauce) and Lemon Parfait (with black sesame meringues and lime curd) in favour of Coconut Pannacotta, with rum-glazed pineapple and brandy snap.

The pannacotta is palate cleaning perfection, light and lovely, and the toasted coconut flakes make for an attractive plate. They also contrast perfectly with the smoothness of the 'cotta.
We are always charmed by this lovely eatery, and today lived up to expectations.

Compliments to chef Simon Harris, whose expertise was responsible for the fantastic dishes we enjoyed.
While Simon says he is a 'meat and fish guy,' his knowledge and flair ensures anyone dining under his watch, regardless of dietary requirements (when we visit The Swan is preparing its first vegan event), can be assured of a fulfilling, tasty time.

The best food enjoyed with friends in a charming environment. It's fulfilling in more ways than one.
