The singer described by our own Dame Cleo Laine as 'bloody marvellous' will be playing at Cleo's venue this week coming - Joanna Eden is making her return to The Stables at Wavendon on Thursday evening (November 29).
Joanna arrives fresh from the release of her latest album, Truth Tree, which hit the racks last month.
The Lincolnshire born lady wrote and performed her first song aged just seven years.
The daughter of a musician and a drama teacher, she could read music before she could write, studied piano from age four and left university 17 years later with her first tour, an all consuming love of Ella Fitzgerald and a weakness for drummers!
Since then, she has performed her original music all over the world alongside world-class artists including Jamie Cullum, Buena Vista Social Club, Ronan Keating and The Blockheads.
Joanna also holds a passion for teaching and amongst her students she includes international star Sam Smith, who she taught singing for some nine years, starting when he was just 10 years old.
During this period she also introduced him to songwriting, co-writing and producing. She is very proud that he cites Joanna simply as “the reason I sing”.
In spring 2018, Joanna featured as a judge on BBC One’s singing show ‘All Together Now’ and found the experience a conflicting one, ultimately concluding that singing competitions are “unhealthy and flawed”.
“The winner is the person who can rise above their fears; to sing with an open heart and an unfettered voice in the face of judgement and possible humiliation," she said.
"The winner looks the harshest judge in the eye and sees nothing because they are in a heavenly world of song. A safe place; untouchable.”
Truth Tree is Joanna’s fifth album of all original material.
Produced by Dave Blackman, Joanna’s piano and vocal were recorded live simultaneously inside a church, making the files impossible to tamper with digitally. This is far from the norm in modern recording techniques but just how Joanna wanted it.
“I am a singer-pianist and perform at my best when I do both together. I love the result! I even love my ‘pitchy’ moments because I feel my pain, my humanity, my struggle.”
If you like the music of these and Carole King, James Taylor and Kate Bush then you’ll love Joanna Eden.
Sold out annually at Ronnie Scott's from 2012 to 2017, this festive jazz entertainment is the perfect way to swing into the holidays.
The groovy sounds of the Chris Ingham Quartet will also feature in Jazz At The Movies: A Swinging Christmas gathers jazzy festive favourites as made famous by Ella, Eartha, Frank, Doris, Dean, Bing and a whole gang of cool celluloid cats and hip Hollywood chicks.
