Milton Keynes-based alternative pop-pers, The Hallows, are set to release a single, Angel, on August 26th, alongside their debut album, Of Time and Tides.
They had music ready to move before they had even come up with the band name, which came from their first single.
"I woke up one morning and it suddenly seemed an obvious choice," says Joe Rodriguez, one third of The Hallows.
"It’s believed that the four elements – air, fire, earth and water – are known as ‘hallows’, and they feature strongly in the lyrics of our songs, so we all felt the name was a perfect fit."
Alongside Joe (drums) is Sarah Rodriguez (vocals/keys/synth) and Dave Pugh (bass). Together, it’s a sassy triptych that formed in London in 2014 after a decade of hanging out and gigging together.
The vision of The Hallows is to ‘create punchy, atmospheric pop with a big sound.'
It’s intelligent, grown-up pop, with erudite lyrics, dreamy melodies, and vocals that are reminiscent of a bit of Kate Bush here, a bit of Tori Amos there.
And in this age of over-production and showing off, it’s a sound we’ve been craving - and one that delivers an infectious idiosyncrasy all of its own.
Unsurprisingly, The Hallows’ musical influences are a tasty fusion too, from Motown through to Beethoven via hard rock.
Being a three-piece has its advantages, and not just the ‘slightly’ lower bar tab!
It means the ideas bounce around with ease, rehearsals are a doddle, and there’s room for everyone to express themselves.
And after 18 months of precisely that, The Hallows went into Riverside Studios in Bath to put down the debut album alongside producer Seb Pecchia (Robert Plant’s Mighty Rearranger).
Tour dates are on their way...
