ON TRACK: GUITAR ACE BERNIE MARSDEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Have a count of the albums that Bernie Marsden has appeared on over the years and you need more than your fingers and all your toes. You need plenty more than that – at a rough guesstimate the ace guitarist has contributed his clever playability to more than 100 albums.

By any stretch, that's an impressive tally, and includes his current album release, Shine.

The Buckingham-based musician is also responsible for one of Total MK's all-time favourite rock tracks Here I Go Again, the Whitesnake number he wrote with frontman David Coverdale...

Ask nicely and he might crank that one out when he returns to his local stage with a date at The Stables next Wednesday (September 23).

Bernie went On Track with Total MK...

The song that first awakened your musical senses

Rave On by Buddy Holly

Physical or digital – how do you take your music?

Physical – CD in the car

The first time you thought 'Music – this is the job for me'

When I saw The Beatles

Your best on stage memory

The Whitesnake reunion in 2011, playing Here I Go Again for the first time live in the UK with David Coverdale. Special.

And the worst gig you've ever done

Dingwalls in London, around 1984. I had a substitute tech who was definitely not a tech and knew nothing about guitars!

What made you take up the guitar?

The fear of a 9-5 job!

Which one song by another artist do you wish you'd written?

Only one? Drift Away by Dobie Gray

And one – by yourself – that holds special significance

Of course it's Here I Go Again

If you could step into the shoes of another musician, living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

I would like to be Harry Styles for a day and see how enjoyable it is??

Or BB King in the 1960s. How's that for opposites?

Are there any current musical influences you might look to?

I listen to a lot of new music, although it doesn't necessarily influence me, but I do enjoy it

And any genre of music you simply can't stand?

Brass band!
