ON TRACK: SUNNY OZELL IN THE TOTAL MK HOTSEAT

Sunny Ozell will wow The Stables on Monday (May 16) when she lets her voice loose at the Wavendon venue, as support to Teddy Thompson.

She is already an accomplished songstress and the New York based classically trained singer has, over time, honed her sound with elements of jazz, blues and American roots.

Teddy Thompson also figures on her debut album Take It With Me, which was released last year.

It brings together a selection of works by various songwriters  - some legendary, some little-known, but all deserving of your ear time.

"I'm really excited to be opening Teddy's shows.  He's such an amazing singer," Sunny said.

"He has not toured the UK in some time so there will be a lot of excitement surrounding these gigs and I'm thrilled to be a part of them, especially at such beautiful and eclectic venues.

And on the album's tracklisting, she said: "I do love the process of interpretation.

"I love making something mine,  I think first you have to figure out what makes the tune so special and why you like it.

"Then you need to find out what it is that needs to stay the same and then what you can bring to it to make it yours, while leaving it untouched in all the right ways."

Sunny went On Track with Total MK...

The song that first awakened your musical senses

Oddly enough, it was a song that featured my name, called “The Obvious Child” off of Paul Simon’s 1990 record Rhythm of The Saints.

Physical or digital - how do you take your music?

A pleasant mix of both.

The first time you thought 'Music - this is the job for me'

There wasn’t ever a time before really…I can honestly say it’s always what I thought I’d do.

Your best on stage memory...

The first time I booked my own solo gig in NYC, and all my friends showed up, it felt like a complete triumph.

I still pinch myself from time to time, when I remember that I’m a singer in New York City.

And the worst gig you've ever done

The VIP after-party of a Neil Diamond concert in Denver.

What made you take up singing

It’s just something I’ve always done. I was in singing lessons at the age of 11 onwards.

Which one song by another artist do you wish you had written

There are countless…but at the moment, “Flying Over Water” by Jason Isbell. It’s anthemic, but also subtly political. Really brilliant writing.

And one - by yourself  - which holds special significance

One from ages ago…”Brown Eyes”.

If you could step into the shoes of another musician, living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

I’d love to know what if feels like to be Bruno Mars.

Are there any current musical influences that you might look to

Again, Jason Isbell.

And any genre of music that you simply can't stand?

Musical theater
