Milton Keynes MP welcomes stringent steps on online safety

Milton Keynes MP Mark Lancaster is impressed by the Government’s Online Harms White Paper which he believes will be a big step forward for cyber safety for young people.

The new laws would tackle big issues online such as revenge pornography, terrorist content, child sex abuse, cyber bullying hate crimes.

They will ensure social media firms have a duty of care to protect their uses and they could face tough penalties if they do not comply.

There is an open consultation period on the White Paper which runs until midnight on July 1 so the people of Milton Keynes can have their say.

Mark Lancaster, the MP for Milton Keynes North, said: “I know the safety of young people online is something that’s become a big issue for parents in Milton Keynes in recent years so it’s good to see action is being taken to prevent harmful content being seen online.

“I’m extremely encouraged by the publishing of the White Paper today which shows the Government is listening and are cracking down on it.”

Home Secretary Sajid Javid added: “The tech giants and social media companies have a moral duty to protect the young people they profit from.

“Despite our repeated calls to action, harmful and illegal content – including child abuse and terrorism - is still too readily available online.

“That is why we are forcing these firms to clean up their act once and for all. I made it my mission to protect our young people – and we are now delivering on that promise.”
