Discover something new: Explore Heritage Open Days in Milton Keynes

It will soon be time for another Heritage Open Days event, and as usual, Milton Keynes will be bursting with things to do and see, including exhibitions, family activities, walks and much more.

It's a chance to get out and about with your nearest and dearest, and go check something different - for free.

In 2018, Heritage Open Days will be running from September 6 to 9, and 13 to 16.

We might be a new town, but Milton Keynes boasts a heritage fascinating and exciting in equal measure, and the stories will be told using craft events, workshops, performances and film screenings.

This year also marks 100 years since many women gained the right to vote, and a number of events across the city will focus on the stories and the contribution of the extraordinary women from the area.

The Living Archive are hosting the exhibition Extraordinary Women, which will shine a light on the women behind the city, while also seeing what it was like for women a century ago.

You'll learn more about Margaret Durbridge the only woman invited to join the first strategic planning group, Margaret Sale, a leading contributor to the saving of Bletchley Park, who has also spent 25 years as a volunteer.

She also played a pivotal role in the founding of The National Museum of Computing.

Marjorie Reid, a local GP, was responsible for the founding of Willen Hospice, along with district nurse Dorothy Jell, and the city's first ever 'artist-in-residence, Liz Leyh, the lady who gave us the concrete cows, will also be featured.

Key attractions opening their doors for free include Milton Keynes Museum, Stadium MK, Great Linford Manor Park, Milton Keynes Theatre, Cowper & Newton Museum, and the MK Arts Centre.

Further afield, Stowe Gardens, Claydon House and The Old Gaol in Buckingham are all taking part.

A wide-range of historic sites, community building and spaces will also open their doors, including places you don't normally get to peek inside - like Festive Road in Kiln Farm and MK Magistrates' Court with working magistrates.

When the event began in 2006 there were just 15 free events. This year, there are in excess of 90.

"The number of attractions and groups that have joined us this year to open their doors and put on free events across the city is astonishing and testament to the fantastic history, culture and community of our city and the surrounding area," said Pete Marland, leader of Milton Keynes Council and Cabinet Member for Culture.
