POIGNANT PERFORMANCE OF NEWTON'S AMAZING GRACE THIS WEEKEND

Saltmine Theatre Company will visit Olney on Saturday (Oct 25) evening, to deliver a performance of John Newton's Amazing Grace. This production is all the more poignant, given that John actually penned the world renowned hymn in his rectory in the town. The performance will take place in St Peter and St Paul Church, where 250 years ago Newton preached for the first time. Few who knew him before, could have foreseen the transformation that occured: Newton had been press-ganged into the navy at 19, flogged for desertion and torn away from the girl he loved, felt he had nothing to live for. He entered the harsh world of the eighteenth century transatlantic slave trade and made his living as an abusive trafficker of human flesh. Then, one stormy night, with his ship going down, Newton faced certain death...and everything changed. Ticket for Saturday's show - which begins at 7.30pm - are on sale direct from The Cowper and Newton Museum. Call 01234 711516 or 01234 713563 for information and bookings.
