In Review: Is The Lion King roar-some, or undeserving of being a 'mane' attraction?

The Lion King (2019)

Director: Jon Favreau. (PG)

Drama

Rating 3/5 worth watching

Synopsis
When his father Mufasa (James Earl Jones) is killed by his cruel, ostracised brother Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor), young lion cub Simba (JD McCrary) is made to believe it was, by proxy, his fault and runs away.

Growing up in self-imposed exile, he reaches adulthood as a respectful and thoughtful young lion (Donald Glover) who is best friends with quip-laden meerkat Timon (Billy Eichner) and flatulent warthog Pumbaa (Seth Rogen).

His childhood friend Nala (Beyonce) accidentally finds him during her travels for help after Scar and his greedy hyena army decimate their land of food and water. Simba has to decide whether to stay in idyllic isolation or defend his home and family.

I'll make an admission here - I have not seen the original, animated version of Disney's The Lion King (1994). A few snippets and a trailer here or there, but not the while shebang.
Cinematic sacrilege, you say?! Well, possibly yes. Possibly no.
After seeing this CGI remake, I'm glad in one respect because, given its towering reputation, it would have been harder to judge this movie on its own merits.
The story is very traditional and had the feminist in me twitching slightly at the 'man on top, leading the women' narrative, but the voice work from the cast is incredible and makes it very emotional. James Earl Jones returns as Mufasa, the wise father figures and Donald Glover is perfect as Simba.
