Experience Milton Keynes Gallery’s stunning new auditorium before it opens to the public

The new MK Gallery opens on March 16, but for one night only the doors are being opened in advance, for an experimental live music tour, Ecstatic Material.

Commissioned by Outlands, a brand new collaborative performance will expand and contract over back to back performances at venues across England.

Ecstatic Material is a dynamic sound sculpture made and performed by electronic musician Beatrice Dillon and visual artist Keith Harrison, and arrives here next Wednesday (February 13).

It is a bright and multicoloured artwork using soft materials (like playdoh) and coloured light with live electronic sound via a surround sound system. Created and operated by the artists within the performance space, audiences will literally see and hear the artwork come alive.

Keith Harrison defines it “a live experiment in which our respective systems are set in motion, bending sound and material. We have an overall structure but have factored in a capacity to react to what’s happening each night and change as the tour progresses and material accumulates.”

Beatrice added: “I’m interested in creating a sense of a physical, tactile presence through sound, one that bumps into and spills over into Keith’s sculptures. I’m excited by the messy physicality of this project, exploring different scale and spatial opportunities and responding to the different constraints of each site.”

Support comes from DJs Copper Sounds who play records and objects made from copper and ceramic materials. Earlier in the day, they will also lead a workshop where participants can design and cast their own wax 7” record and take it home with them.

MK Gallery’s new auditorium - The Sky Room - is a fully flexible, perfectly equipped new space on the upper floor for up to 300 people, with spectacular views over Campbell Park and the surrounding countryside, which will be used amongst other things as the first independent cinema for Milton Keynes, programmed with Curzon Cinemas.

Ecstatic Material takes place on Wednesday from 8pm. Tickets are £10 and £8 in advance.  Click here for yours.
