SONISPHERE SPECIAL: ON TRACK - GLASS CITY VICE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
Brighton-based alt-rock quartet Glass City Vice will make their festival debut at Sonisphere, on Friday, July 5.
Guitarist Ed Lytton Cobbold tackled our On Track questions...
The song that first awakened your musical senses
It would probably have been Supertramp - Breakfast in America. One of my Dad's favourite albums. Growing up it was hard to go in the kitchen without hearing it, as it still is!
Physical or digital - how do you take your music
There's no doubt that digital music has its advantages. It's a great tool combined with social media to share and discover new music, plus being able to carry hundreds of albums everywhere is always convenient.
However I personally find vinyl encourages you to appreciate an album as a whole. Not a lot beats a vinyl record through a decent amplifier and speaker set up, except seeing the artist live I suppose!
The first time you thought 'Music - this is the job for me'
When I first started playing guitar at the age of 15. I finally found something I loved and was half decent at, that also distracted people from the fact I was terrible at sports
Your best on-stage memory
Crowd surfing at a gig in my living room in Brighton. Does that count?
And the worst gig you've ever done
One of our first gigs as a band, at a small football club near our drummer's house in Walton on Thames. I managed to kick over a pint of beer on stage, and then proceeded to slip and fall spectacularly in front of all his family watching us for the first time. It's safe to say I no longer drink before shows!
What made you take up the guitar
My Dad ensured there was always a guitar next to the TV at home, so it was only a matter of time!
Which one song by another artist do you wish you had written
Anything by Andy Hull really, but if I had to pick one it would be Simple Math
And one - by yourself - which holds special significance
The Xcerts - Home Versus Home. It reminds me of first moving to Brighton and getting immersed in the local music scene
If you could step into the shoes of another musician, living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?
Dave Grohl, he's just had the coolest career. I'd then book a Foo Fighters headline show at Knebworth!
Are there any current musical influences you might look to
As a band we all take influence from loads of different bands and genres, but we've all been listening to lots of Manchester Orchestra, Death Cab for Cutie and Brand New
And any genre of music you simply can't stand
Minimalistic Deep House. I find it bland and repetitive, where are the hooks?
Given the chance, whose set would you most like to catch over the Sonisphere weekend
Limp Bizkit have always been a Sonisphere highlight of mine in previous years. Wes Borland is a riff machine
What can we expect from your Sonisphere set?
Pop hooks with balls
