A new production by the Wolverton Gilbert & Sullivan Society on Thursday and Friday (July 6 & 7) focuses on one of the most famous unsolves crimes...ever.
Set partly in a music hall and partly in the surrounding East End London streets and buildings, Jack the Ripper - the Musical is a humorous musical melodrama giving an atmospheric commentary on life at the time of the murders, which took place between August 31st and November 9th, 1888.
The murder victims were all women, and the purpetrator became known as Jack the Ripper because of a letter sent to Scotland Yard, apparently by the one responsible.
The identity of Jack the Ripper has been a mystery ever since...
The street scenes in the show depict the day-to-day lifestyle of Victorian East London where the only relief from the daily grind was Saturday night at the music hall.
There, everyone could enjoy singing, dancing, and satirical sketches, which enabled them to forget, albeit briefly, the terror stalking their streets.
They would poke fun at their own situation and at the establishment, in particular the police, for the way they handled the murders.
Even Queen Victoria was not safe from their wit and East End humour. The varied music includes catchy, foot-tapping chorus numbers, comic songs, refined music hall melodies and poignant ballads.
Leave the kids at home for this one though - it's adults only, ok?
Tickets are available at £12 (Conc. £10) from First Night on 01908 510452 or here
