Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610; Enjoy an Italian feast in Woburn.
The Danesborough Chorus aims high to a pinnacle of 17th century Italian music, Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, for its summer concert in St Mary's Parish Church, Woburn.
This sumptuous feast of Baroque vocal and instrumental styles was written as 13 separate pieces by 43-year-old Monteverdi reputedly seeking to show off everything he knew to a prospective employer.
His 'musical curriculum vitae' helped secure him the job as choirmaster at St Mark's Basilica in Venice.
Did Monteverdi, the greatest composer of his time, ever hear his glittering masterpiece performed as a single work? It's unlikely _ but you can, as the multi-part choir and its conductor, Ian Smith, join forces with the period orchestra Fiori Musicali and an all-star line-up of soloists for a truly authentic performance.
The drama and joyfulness of Monteverdi's richly mercurial music will fill this resonant church setting.
The Vespers of 1610 is not performed as often as it deserves, so don't miss this opportunity! And why not bring strawberries and wine to enjoy in the church grounds during the longer-than-usual interval?
Tickets for the show, on Saturday, June 29 are £20 & £17 (centre, reserved); £10 (aisles, unreserved); under 18s £5 (all areas).
