On Saturday, March 16 the new MK Gallery will open with a dedicated Learning Studio for schools, families and community groups.
Hosting fun weekly activities and wide-ranging workshops, the space will provide high quality creative encounters, placing a clear emphasis on nurturing curiosity in children and young people, and community engagement.
The Studio will host the Gallery’s popular weekly activities for families: Start the Art for under 5s, Saturday Studio for ages 5+ and Art and Us, a programme for families with children with complex needs, which was recently shortlisted in the category of Best Family Event in the Fantastic For Families 2019 Awards.
Just outside The Studio is the City Club Playscape – a children’s play area designed by artists Gareth Jones and Nils Norman which draws inspiration from an unrealised 1970s leisure complex for Central Milton Keynes.
“We have seen how engagement with art has a direct impact on wellbeing and results in education," said Victoria Mayes, head of learning at MK Gallery.
"The Studio will enable us to increase our programmes, providing more experiences that stimulate creativity, build confidence and promote independent thinking.
"We work closely with schools, families and community groups to broaden horizons, challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations. Our sessions take a hands on, sensory approach to art - placing emphasis on play and exploration; active learning; and thinking critically.”
MK Gallery’s award-winning Learning Programme encourages curiosity, enquiry and exchange through a direct contact with artists and their practice.
The programme, shaped by a team of Associate Artists, encourages the playful and experimental whilst grounded in a strong understanding of how people - especially children and young people - experience the world.
